Q&A : How can we incorporate music into our wedding day?

Q: Music is so important to us, we want it to be featured all  throughout the day. How can we blend different styles during the course of our wedding celebrations from day into the night?

Music is an important part of any Wedding Day. Including Music throughout the day allows you to to create the right atmosphere at each stage of your celebrations.

Most Weddings have key parts where you can feature live or recorded music. These sections include the Ceremony, the Drinks Reception, the Wedding Breakfast and the Evening Reception.

It is possible to include a range of styles within your music programme for the day. Live Music always adds a bit of extra magic to proceedings and there are a wide range of great instrumentalists out there to choose from.

As a musician and singer, music played special role in my own big day. I chose to have a classical guitarist play during my ceremony and drinks reception and everyone commented on how romantic this was. The drinks reception is a great time to include a bit of live music, as guests are usually left to their own devices whilst the happy couple are having photos taken.

As we had a vintage theme, we decided upon a 1920s playlist prior to the Ceremony and during the Wedding Breakfast. We then had an amazing retro band for our evening celebrations and this really made the day perfect for me!

Your wedding band will typically play two 45 or 60 minute sets but many also offer a DJ service alongside this to cover the whole evening.

Another way to save money is to go directly to the musicians rather than through an agent, who will typically add 20% to the fee. Some musicians offer packages to keep costs down (e.g. ceremony and drinks reception). It may also be worth asking if there is any possibility of a discount, especially during quieter wedding months or for last minute bookings. Do be aware though that musicians do a lot more than just turn up and play. Any requests will be specially prepared in addition to normal rehearsals and set up and sound check will typically take an hour. With get out and travel this can be a long day.

The best general advice I could give about Music choices (and in fact the whole day) would be to do it your own way. There is no right or wrong and guests often appreciate something that is a little bit different. Enjoy YOUR day!
