Real Wedding: Vicky + Paul, Hillbark Hotel

On a cold February day earlier this year, myself and Team Glamorama hair stylist Sara Bloom had the absolute pleasure of providing wedding hair and makeup at the fabulous Hillbark Hotel and Wedding Venue for Vicky and her bridal party. It was such a happy day, and I knew it would be a perfect wedding to feature here on the blog!

I asked Vicky how she and Paul met, “Myself and Paul meet when we were 16, it was through a mutual friend. I went to a youth camp that they belonged to and knew straight away that I liked him. As part of a bonding activity we had to support each other on a high ropes course (Paul DOES NOT do heights) I had hold of Paul’s harness to encourage and support him and he was freaking out walking along. At this point the only thing I really knew about him is that he plays rugby, so I tried to tell him to man up ‘I thought rugby players are meant to be all macho and Grrrr?’ It made him laugh and he began to forget what he was doing as I took the piss out of him! From then we became really close friends until he got up the nerve to ask me out- and the rest is history!”

How did he pop the question? “Paul was very sweet and without me even realising he had recreated one of our first dates. He took me to the zoo (one of our favourite places) and even re-enacted some of the photos we took that day. The day turned into one of the hottest days of summer but we had left quite early and I didn’t look that way when I got dressed, so I had on a suede dress on with tights and boots (I was sooo hot) I began to moan about being so hot and needing to go home and get changed but Paul was adamant we stayed in Chester. After the zoo, Paul too me to Chester Park and we walked around before stopping to rest. Just as Paul wanted to pop the question and a group of young boys came around playing the Pokemon Go game, looking for different Pokemon and apparently we were in a prime spot. So Paul got annoyed and said “we need to move!”. I was comfy but he really wanted to move, so we walked along looking out at the River Dee and I turn around and he is on one knee. In shock I mutter no no no, (it was purely shock nothing else- but he will forever taunt me of that). He said a beautiful speach about loving me, and I said yes! He had picked the ring himself wanting it to be unique and special to me. He is my Prince Charming!”

How long did you spend planning your wedding? “We got engaged in the July of 2017 and I went to my first wedding fair in the September, just looking around and getting ideas as I wasn’t sure what I wanted. From then we looked for venues first and things flowed from there. We got married on the 10th February 2018.”

Did you use any special planning tools to help you along the way? “My mum was my main help in all of the wedding planning, but I did also have a wedding book (which was just a note pad that mum called the wedding bible- it just had all notes and scribbles in that only I could understand). I eventually transferred it into a real wedding planner but that was only when everything was confirmed.”

What was the first thing that you booked? “The first thing I booked was the venue, Hillbark Hotel, we had looked around a good few places before finally picking Hillbark. It had everything we wanted, a great hall to get married in, a marque for the evening and beautiful surrounding and nature to get the best photos. Soon after we bought the rings.”

Who did you have in your wedding party? “The wedding party ended up being big as Paul was greedy and asked 4 people to be his best men. He had his brother, and 3 best friends (only 2 had a speech). I had 4 bridesmaids, my sister was my maid of honour, Paul’s sister and 2 best friends. We also had 3 ushers, my brother, Paul’s other brother and Paul’s soon to be brother in law. It was nice to have everyone involved.”

What was the hen do like? “My hen do was a surprise, I knew I was going away in October half term but didn’t know where I was going. My sister had organised it all and made an itinerary of the trip. I found out the morning of that we were going to Madrid! It was amazing- I had Disney ears with a veil and everyone had t-shirts with different princesses on. We went the zoo, park, delicious food and a tour around the city- it was great!”

Tell us about your venue and why you chose it. “We picked Hillbark Hotel as our venue as it had everything we wanted, it had a great hall to get married in and have our wedding breakfast in and a marque for the evening reception and beautiful surroundings for lovely photos. It took us a while to pick a venue, it was nearly Speke Hall but it was too small for the amount of guests we wanted. Hillbark was by far the best choice and the service there was incredible!”

Was there a theme to your wedding? “Our theme was nature with a hint of Disney, odd I know, but very us. We had log slices as center pieces with jam jars I had decorated on top. In the jars were beautiful wild flowers, a candle, and twigs with lights on. Everything was quite rustic and beautiful. The Disney part was the table names, each our favourite Disney films- our table was ‘Tangled- Best day ever!’”

We need to know about the dress! “My dress was simple, but just what I wanted, it was fitted and strapless with little detail. I had trouble finding a dress as I wasn’t sure how you knew it was ‘the one’ but I soon realised the feeling, and just knew when I tried on my dress. My dress was from Wed2B, is suited me perfectly as there wasn’t too much of a fuss over me which is what I wanted (I didn’t like the shops where I was centre of attention and they thought best). There was a huge variety of dresses and the prices were so reasonable, I got my dress, a belt and a underskirt for just over £500.”

How about your flowers? “My flowers were stunning, even better then I imagined, they were done by Gemma from Booker Flowers in Liverpool. I had wild flowers, Gypsy grass, daisies, and burgundy gerbera daisies. I loved them, they suited me perfectly.”

How was having your hair and makeup done by Glamorama Makeup? “My hair and make up was simple, but made me feel like a princess. Vicky made me feel comfortable in my own skin and allow me to still look like me. My hair was curled and parts plaited back so my veil could sit on it. I wore a crown of gypsy grass to add to my hair style, the bridesmaids had their hair braided and put up with gypsy grass tucked it- they looked amazing! Working with Vicky was great, she made me feel calm and comfortable before the big day ahead. She was funny and helpful in every way- she started off my day with a smile, preparing me for the best day ever!”

Who were your photographer and videographer, and why did you choose them? “Our photographer and videographer was Make Life Memorable, they were incredible, they took photos WE wanted, fun photos, natural photos and family and friend photos. They enjoyed our day as much as us and captured every moment of our happiness in the day. Every photo they took we are laughing and smiling, they really went above and beyond for us!”

What was your cake like? “Our wedding cake was simple from Marks and Spencers, 4 tiered Victoria sponge with a fruit cake for the bottom for stability. Our florist decorated it with the same flowers as my bouquet and it had a rustic sign ‘Best day ever- Mr & Mrs Jones 10.02.18’”

Did you have entertainment? “I hired Paul Carr from Unique Rocks, he provided me with a photo-booth, cake stand and rustic love letters. Everyone loved them and got lots of photos! I also had the hotel’s DJ that had everyone on the dance floor the whole night (I’d never seen such a packed dance floor) and for the ceremony my friend Joe played the organ and piano for us- it was beautiful.”

Tell us about the special touches that you had on the day that were special and personal to you as a couple. “Special touches for us was mostly the fun photos we took, Paul likes to take a lot of pulling tongue faces so we had to include them as well as having nature like photos for me. The nature theme was mostly about me and my love of rustic and flowers and it brought in my favourite Disney princess Pocahontas. Paul and I also bought each other gifts which was a special touch- I bought him a wooden engraved watch and personalised boxers and socks and he got me a gorgeous Links of London bracelet that symbolises two rings locked together. Each gift came with a note which made each of us a little emotional. Also, the ‘Best day ever’ theme came from the first Disney film we seen together ‘Tangled’, which we both adore. Paul also picked our first dance song, ‘Amazed’ by Lonestar, and the lyrics to it just make my heart melt as I love how he heard it and thought of us!”

What was the most special part of your day? “The most special part of the day is really hard to pick- it was all special, without sounding too cheesy I married my best friend and the day was perfect, I couldn’t ask for anything more special! The ceremony was lovely and intimate and I loved the speeches, they were so personal and funny towards us both and we just danced all evening!”

Where did you honeymoon? “After the wedding we had a mini-moon in Edinburgh for a couple of days and then met up with my family in Inverness (February family tradition). But we have an amazing honeymoon booked for August, we are going to Disneyworld Florida and then on a Caribbean cruise- we just can’t wait!!!”

Anything you would have changed about your day? “I wouldn’t have changed a thing!”

What advice do you have for our couples that are planning their weddings? “I would just say embrace it all, take as much as you can in as it all goes so fast. You will be wondering why you have paid a lot of money on just a day, but believe me the memories and the feeling you have is totally worth it! Stay with your partner for as much of it as you can and take it in together, find time to be together and talk and don’t worry about not talking to everyone, it’s your day- you’re allowed to be selfish! It is important to have a great photographer that captures every moment as they are you memories for the rest of your life- cherish and look back at them. Happiness! And most of all stay calm and just enjoy it!”

Thank you Vicky and Paul for sharing the details of your big day with us! We wish you nothing but love and happiness together.
